The Internet today is a very powerful tool that has gained popularity for almost a decade ago. Because of its interactive and informative sites, people have taken notice and became hooked to spending time surfing the net. Surprisingly, it is the children who make up a huge bulk of the regular users of the Internet.
Because accessing the net is very easy and convenient, children have a variety of options on where they could surf. If not at home, a child can go to a friend's house so they can play together. Internet cafes are also a good choice, since many similar shops have opened to keep up with the increasing demand. Museums and libraries also have Internet access for people who visit them regularly. In certain commercial establishments, people can come in and use a computer, or bring their laptops that are powered by the wireless connection. These other options have different levels and degrees of supervision and rules regarding kids surfing the Internet. Some may be strict, like libraries, while others give kids free rein on what they do.
Children surf the net for varying reasons and ways, which depending on several factors like age and their particular interests or hobbies. Because the net is designed to be user-friendly and simple, kids can start using it as soon as they know how to read and use the computer. Parents who want to expose their children to technology early, do so when a child is around three or four. Afterward, as the child grows or reaches the age six, most already have the idea on what kind of sites they would enjoy visiting. These ideas may be based on their needs or wants, like researching for a certain subject for school, playing interactive games, or sending messages to their friends.
It is undeniable that the Internet is such a fascinating and exciting world. Children find that it is a great tool to help them out to do researches and reports for school. Interactive sites are very popular these days, and among them are those that deal with science and technology or history. Learning has become fun for kids as they could now see how man evolved from apes, or how the universe was created because of the life-like graphics available. Languages are now easy to learn as interactive sites provide online tutorial sessions complete with pronunciation guides and voice samples. Choosing science projects online gives students an advantage over others, while researching about difficult topics keep them ahead in the competition at school.
All work and no play makes kids very dull, so the Internet has come up with great games that promise unlimited hours of fun and variety. There's a lot of games to choose from, kids of all ages will have something that can cater to their needs and preference. For the serious kids, they have the option to pick any of the different kinds of board games, puzzle games, and word games online. These games develop linguistic, mathematical, and motor skills and have varying difficulty that can be played by kids of all ages. Aside from mind games, there are interactive games in arcade, combat, and role playing games of different genres. Kids find themselves enjoying as they play interesting games that may be full of action, adventure, mystery, fantasy, suspense, or horror. Of all the kinds of games, these are the ones that are very popular in different parts of the world.
Being a worldwide community, the Internet is also a great place to meet friends. Children can keep in touch not only with their close pals in the neighborhood or school that have relocated to another place, but they can also make friends with kids their age in another country. There are different chat rooms available throughout cyberspace, and kids can use this to their advantage to gain a new friend.
Unfortunately, not everything in the Internet is fun and safe. In fact, parents must be aware that their kids are in danger if they don't know how to wisely use the programs in the Internet. One of the most obvious problems of surfing the net for far too long is the danger of being preyed upon by cyber criminals. Because children may be trusting or gullible, they can be easily overpowered by pedophiles and other criminals. Meeting friends on the Internet may be exciting, but it can also be dangerous, since the child has no idea on the true identity of his or her friend. For all we know, that sweet young girl who is an honor student or that kind young man who is a member of a school band is actually a middle-aged man with a not-so-innocent agenda in his mind. Children make the mistake of telling personal things about themselves, and even send pictures to their friends, and this makes them even more vulnerable from shady characters. Some even go out to meet their 'friend' out at the mall, only to disappear, never to be seen by their families again.
Another serious threat is something that parents consider too feeble that they take it for granted is the impact of inappropriate web materials and pieces of information, which can be noxious to the minds of the youngsters. Unfortunately, the physical safety of the children is not the only thing parents should worry about. Because of the different kinds of information found within the net, children are now exposed to things that they should have no business knowing. These are the sites that are pornographic, gory, and violent. Though it may be true that filter systems can help prevent a child from seeing a certain site that has mature content, parents cannot prevent or control their kids enough. This is because the games that are found in the Internet also contain similar themes. For example, one of the most famous games today in the net is the Counter Strike. Of course, older kids know and understand the difference between game and reality, but the younger ones are still unable to properly process and distinguish right from wrong. Similarly, there are also games that have heavy sexual themes that are not meant to be played by children.
Parents must be made aware that despite the advantages brought about by the use of the Internet, they should make sure to continue taking care of their children. Monitoring their time in the net and checking on the sites they go to is but their obligation and duty. The parents should also remember never to let the Internet act as a babysitter or companion to their children.
