Internet Safety and Privacy 4: Internet Security Software

Internet Security Software
As discussed previously, people who frequently use the Internet needs a good security software. This is to protect the computer system from unwanted data and viruses. Though there are many responsible Internet and computer users who take care of their systems and are careful in guarding them against harmful entities, electronic or otherwise, it is still not enough. Everyone knows that no matter how hard one tries to take care of their computer systems, something can always slip past their watchful eyes. Due to the fact that many are aware of the importance of such software, it is not enough to protect files from these viruses. Therefore, software companies continue to come up with more and more variations and updates of such tools to assist computer users. This in fact is a good thing because viruses and hackers become more and more cunning, making them increasingly difficult to catch and counter. Some of the software is expensive, while there are a few that are reasonably priced.

Of course, there are different types of software that provides Internet security that are available in the market, and it would be difficult to pick just one from them. For some, even one of these different kinds of software for Internet is enough, but others, especially for those whose business depends on the net need more than one. These security tools are not only used for home purposes, but also for work. There are different kinds of Internet security software tools available, and we are going to discuss the ones that are most commonly used or needed.

First is the firewall, which refers to the hardware and computer software that is placed into an environment that is networked in order to prevent the entry and flow of data that are disapproved by the company's security policy. Also called as the Border Protection Device or BPD, the firewall is tasked to control the traffic between the different trust zones of the network. Its main purpose is to enforce security policy while connecting the zones that are allowed. The firewall demands a proper configuration and understanding of its security and protocol for it to work properly. The installer should be careful because one mistake could make a firewall unable to function well.

The existence of Firewall first came to be during the latter part of the 1980s, with the appearance of a certain virus. Firewall became the answer to the threats of viruses and other computer pests. The first of the firewalls was known as the Packet-Filter Firewall. This was soon followed by the Circuit-Level Firewall and the Application-Layer firewall.

Firewall also has three basic and different types, and these depend on certain conditions. The first is if there is communication between networks; the second is if the communication at a network or application layers are intercepted; and third is if the firewall tracks a communication state.

Next is the Spam Filters and Spam Blockers, which are service programs that limit and control the number of spam messages and junk mail in the e-mail. Spam filter services work by sorting and checking the messages by different categories like message subject, body, approved and blocked senders, blacklist, country code, and paper form. On the other hand, Spam Blockers automatically delete files that are qualified or categorized as harmful. A computer user only needs to code certain messages depending on their importance in order to assist the blocker program in knowing which one to delete.

Households that have children need certain specialized programs like the Parental Control Software. These options are basically included in new versions of computer software and this helps or allows parents to limit or monitor the sites and webpages that their children can access. This works by making the parents choose the ratings of the sites that are available for their kids. For example, the parent can specify that any site that features gore, violence, nudity, and sex is not allowed for the child and he blocks it. Once the child attempts to log-in or link into a site that falls under the same category, he or she is denied access unless he has the security code.

A similar program to the Parental Control Software is the Adult Content Filter programs. Most of these are shareware and they work by blocking or removing porn and other inappropriate sites for children from a web browser. Most of the time, when surfing the net, people use search engines and these sometimes yields site links to pornographic or violent webpages because of certain keywords. Often, when children innocently type in a certain keyword, the search comes up with a link to improper sites and data. The adult content filter software makes sure that nothing like this would happen while your son or daughter is surfing the net for a science project.

Lastly, another important tools for Internet security are the anti-hacking tools. Because of the threat of hackers, there are now many types of anti-hacking software out in the market. Being plenty, these are grouped according to its uses. Anti-hacking software are available for the home, office, and for both.

In choosing from the mentioned software, one must first consider his or her budget. Admittedly, most of the programs mentioned can be pricey, therefore the potential buyer must first have a reasonable working budget in order to afford a program. Second, consider the nature and frequency of your net surfing. Ask yourself if you can make do with simple programs or if you really need to buy the sophisticated ones. By nature, security programs that are for office or local network use are more expensive than those made for the home. Try to look at product reviews to see which of the programs work better than others. Third, check if the program is something that caters to a specific age bracket. Families with young kids or adolescents below the legal age in the household needs certain programs like Parental Control security software.

Computer users must remember that though the Internet is helpful in their daily lives, they must always be in the lookout for dangerous programs and people that lurk behind. Though a security software may be expensive, it could probably be the best investment one could have.
